Will whitening work for me?

Whitening lightens staining from things like tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, and the yellowing that comes with age. It works on natural teeth only. It won’t change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers, so if you have any at the front, they’ll stay as they are while the teeth around them get lighter.
Some discolouration doesn’t respond well, such as grey teeth caused by a damaged nerve or certain medicines. That’s why we look at your teeth before you start: if whitening isn’t the right answer, we’ll tell you, and explain what would be.
How it works
We make whitening trays shaped exactly to your teeth, and give you a professional whitening gel to use at home.
- We check your teeth and gums and clean them, so the gel works evenly. Any decay or leaky fillings need fixing first.
- We take a scan and make your custom trays.
- You wear the trays with the gel at home, as often and for as long as we recommend for your teeth.
- We check how it’s going. You can top up later with the same trays.
Why see a dentist rather than buy a kit?
Trays made for your teeth hold the gel where it should be and keep it off your gums. And because we check your teeth first, you won’t spend money whitening teeth that need other treatment, or find out afterwards that a front filling now doesn’t match.
Sensitivity
Some people find their teeth feel sensitive while they’re whitening. It usually settles once you stop. If it happens, tell us — we can adjust how often you wear the trays.
What it costs, and whether your fund covers it
The cost covers the check and clean beforehand, your custom trays and the whitening gel. You’ll know the price before you start. Health funds rarely pay for whitening, because it’s cosmetic, but the check-up and clean beforehand are usually claimable.
Planning around fillings and crowns
If you have tooth-coloured fillings or crowns at the front that you’ll want to match your new shade, it’s usually best to whiten first and replace them afterwards, once the colour has settled. We’ll plan that order with you so you only pay to match the colour once.
When to wait
We’ll usually suggest holding off on whitening if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have untreated decay or gum problems, or if your teeth are already very sensitive. We’ll sort out anything that needs treatment first.

What's involved →Questions people ask
Can I whiten my teeth if I already have fillings or crowns?
Whitening only lightens natural teeth, not fillings, crowns or veneers. If you have any at the front, they'll stay the same colour, so we'll look at that with you before you start.
If I already have retainer trays, can I use them for whitening?
Yes, you can often reuse trays you already have, as long as they fit well. If they don't, we can make you new ones.
How long does whitening last?
It varies. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking bring staining back sooner. Many people do an occasional top-up with the same trays to keep it bright.
Is whitening safe for my teeth?
Whitening done with a dentist's guidance, after we've checked your teeth and gums, is generally considered safe. The most common side effect is some temporary sensitivity, which usually settles once you stop.
