Check-up and clean in Moorooka

A thorough look at your teeth and gums and a professional clean — the visit that keeps bigger, more expensive treatment away.

When you book online, choose General Examination.

What’s included

At Floss & Gloss, a check-up and a clean are done in the same appointment. It covers an examination, a scale and clean, a polish and a fluoride treatment, plus x-rays if we need them.

  1. We ask about your health, any medicines you take, and anything that’s bothering you.
  2. We check each tooth for decay and wear, check your gums, and look at the rest of your mouth.
  3. If it’s been a while, or we need a closer look, we take digital x-rays. They show decay between teeth and problems below the gum line that we can’t see.
  4. We clean your teeth: scaling off the hardened tartar that brushing can’t remove, then polishing.
  5. We tell you what we found in plain English. If anything needs treatment, you’ll get the options and the cost before anything is booked.

What it costs, and what your fund pays

The price depends on what you need on the day — mainly whether it’s your first visit (a longer, comprehensive exam) and whether you need x-rays. You’ll know the cost before anything is done. See our fees page for current prices.

If you have extras cover, you can claim on the spot with HICAPS and pay only the difference. With most health funds, a check-up and clean has no gap to pay.

To check what your fund will pay before you come in, ask them about these dental item numbers — the codes every Australian fund uses:

  • 011 or 012 — examination (011 is a comprehensive exam for new patients or after a long gap; 012 is a routine one)
  • 114 — scale and clean
  • 121 — fluoride treatment
  • 022 — x-ray, per image (only if needed)

Eligible children can be covered by the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

Why it’s worth it

Most dental problems can be prevented, and the ones that can’t are far easier to fix when they’re small. A small filling found at a check-up is a much simpler — and cheaper — visit than a root canal for the same tooth a year later.

Tartar can only be removed with a professional clean. Left alone, it inflames the gums, which can lead to gum disease and, over time, loose teeth.

If it’s been a while

Plenty of people put off the dentist for years — you’re not alone, and you don’t need to do anything before you come. Your first visit back is a proper look and an honest conversation about what does and doesn’t need doing, at your pace. What happens at your first visit →

Common questions

Questions people ask

How often should I have a check-up?

It depends on your teeth and gums, so we'll suggest a timing for you. For many people it's every six to twelve months; if you've had gum problems or a lot of decay, it may be more often.

Do I need x-rays every time?

No. We only take x-rays when we need them — for example at your first visit, if it's been a while, or to check a particular tooth.

Will the clean hurt?

Most people find it comfortable. If your gums are tender or bleed, or you have sensitive teeth, tell us and we'll take it more gently.
